Practitioner FAQ
What can BrainPaint do for me?
- It delivers 15 years of scientifically tested experience to you, a technician or a home user you supervise. In fact, Bill Scott has fine tuned his automated assessment tool so successfully that it now can calculate protocols faster and more accurately than he can!
- You will always be up-to-date on the latest protocols and research in the field of EEG biofeedback. Think of BrainPaint like a trade journal integrated with your EEG biofeedback software. It will automatically update and deliver current information on demand when you need it! BrainPaint will suggest new protocols that have been recently tested and made available. What it will not do is make protocol suggestions because one or two practitioners had good results with something.
- Just as one doesn’t need to be a mechanic to drive a car, the BrainPaint assessment tool assumes the mechanics for you allowing you to concentrate on your core competency - being a practitioner.
- It can assist with bookkeeping and electronic billing in your practice – to help you with accurate and timely receivables.
Why do we call it EEG biofeedback instead of neurofeedback?
- They both refer to the same training. However, we have gotten into the habit of saying EEG biofeedback to be consistent with insurance carriers. A couple examples of CPT and HCPCS codes used for EEG biofeedback are as follows: 90801 for EEG biofeedback services and 90876 for EEG biofeedback when combined with therapy. Also, neurofeedback is a general term for all brain feedback including fMRI and blood flow (HEG).
Your brochure says something about detecting positive and negative reactions. What is that about?
- The software asks your client follow-up questions that usually predicts positive or negative responsiveness to the feedback protocols. Comparisons are calculated and recommendations may be formulated to improve results. It also calculates and stores subtle indicators of progress in growth scores; these are then referenced to find protocols that work well and flag protocols that you may want to avoid with a particular client.
What is the BrainPaint system doing? Why is it unique and different from other EEG biofeedback software?
- First of all, BrainPaint does what other systems do with regard to thresholding by rewarding and inhibiting specific brainwaves. It just does it automatically. It gives audio and visual representations of that same linear data. Additionally, BrainPaint extracts a new metric on the complexity of the EEG and feeds that back visually in a language the brain functions in. Our brains and BrainPaint are complex systems -- BrainPaint takes information communicated directly from the brain and creates real-time fractal images that the brain appears to understand. Most EEG biofeedback systems only give information on the size and speed of brainwaves which the research suggests is plenty to enhance performance. Yet there are many studies, including those Bill was involved in, that failed to significantly change the faster frequencies even though nearly 80% of the subjects showed significant improvements in their change objectives. This suggests the brain is changing something in the nonlinear realms. Bill has discovered a new metric that BrainPaint records and gives feedback on as well. The additional feedback encoded in the fractal pictures could be the reason why BrainPaint is so effective.
- BrainPaint is not only software and hardware, but an ongoing subscription service to a comprehensive and evolving knowledge base of clinical experience from around the world. You will have at your fingertips tips, the efficacy of certain protocols for specific performance enhancing objectives.
What makes it easier to use than other systems?
- It is point and click EEG biofeedback. It's ease of use is in the order of the Iphone that doesn’t even come with an instruction manual.
- It’s a systematic approach to the initial assessment, as well as, subsequent sessions for the purposes of changing protocols and monitoring progress with regards to your client’s objectives. The automation is similar to that of computerized chess tracking an enormous amount of data used to explore the potential of future moves. This allows you more time to focus on the human aspects of the session.
How do you know BrainPaint is so effective?
- BrainPaint’s evaluation questionnaire and generated protocols came from a randomized controlled clinical trial conducted by a UCLA research team and was overseen by the institution’s Human Subjects Committee. The study involved 121 subjects and was conducted at CRI-Help, an addiction treatment facility in North Hollywood, CA. The outcome: attentional variables were normalized in an average of 13 sessions, and there was significantly enhanced retention in treatment yielding a notably higher percentage of abstinence among subjects one year post treatment. The study was published in the August, 2005 edition of the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. Since it was mandatory that the research design be systematic and dictated by a manual, Bill Scott then programmed the processes. It is this electronic version of the research design that has been incorporated in BrainPaint instructing the software do everything the researchers needed to do pre and post study. Bill has since added more protocols to BrainPaint using the same stringent criteria.
- Bill Scott has been using BrainPaint in his own practice and at the exclusive Moonview Sanctuary for two years and client satisfaction and referrals have been high due to people meeting or exceeding their initial goals.
- An independent laboratory, along with UCLA’s Lobsang Rapgay as the Principal Investigator, are currently conducting a randomized controlled clinical trial on ADD. Some of the subjects' reaction time have become so fast that the standardized continuous performance test (TOVA) is unable to accurately interpret their results. Research associates are adapting and incorporating this phenomena into the study that will be published in 2008.
Can I buy the software or entire system outright?
- No. BrainPaint was never developed with commercial use in mind. It is a labor of love fueled by Bill’s passion to learn the language of the brain, help his clients, bring more credibility to and awareness of the field of EEG biofeedback. We are responding to continued requests to make BrainPaint available to other practitioners in the most responsible way that we can. Since BrainPaint has unique technological demands, we can only release the software on a controlled platform with a compatible amplifier. For example, the software is very CPU sensitive utilizing 99% of the computer’s operating potential; therefore, BrainPaint requires a dedicated system. Running other applications, or potentially spyware, could diminish the quality of the feedback.
- Bill is committed to continued research and development in the field of EEG biofeedback. Therefore, the software and knowledge base will continually expand throughout the life of your subscription. Bill is not committed to the complexity of supporting his software on multiple platforms with multiple versions of Microsoft’s Operating System.
Are there benefits to a subscription versus purchasing a system?
- Yes!
- There are tax benefits! Your subscription payment may be 100% deductible. Please consult with your Accountant regarding possible tax advantages.
- Some of our practitioners charge for the initial evaluation, which more than offsets their monthly subscription price.
- Some of our practitioners are involved with the initial evaluation and supervise the training, but have a clinician running sessions. Since BrainPaint is easy to use, they are able to grow their practice and create a clinic.
- Your initial investment and commitment is small. If you don’t like it, and you don’t see results, return it. All we ask is for a minimum three month subscription.
- Your system will always be up-to-date – the hardware will always be compatible and powerful enough to run the software. If something goes wrong, we can easily troubleshoot and fix problems remotely. If necessary, will swap out your entire system.
- Your subscription will keep you up-to-date on the newest protocols and research from around the world.
What if I already have a computer including biofeedback software and an amplifier? Can’t I just use that?
- No, with one exception. Practitioners who own a BrainMaster Atlantis amplifier are eligible for a $100/month discount. The reason for this inflexibility is that Bill has tailored the software to work optimally on certain platforms, taking full advantage of its processing power. Our intention and mission is to provide Bill’s system in a cost effective manner without sacrificing excellent customer support all the while supporting his passion to focus more on practitioner training, research and development.
How fast can I get my system?
- Depending on where you live, you will receive your system within 10 days.
Does it come with training and supervision?
- Yes.
- Bill Scott provides live ongoing supervision and support for our active network of practitioners every Thursday from 1:30pm PST - 3pm PST. During this conference call, Bill will answer questions about BrainPaint or clinical questions that may arise during the week with your clients. You do not have to register in order to participate and there are no additional fees for this supervision and support. All you need to do is dial in with a number we will give you when you become a BrainPaint subscriber.
- Bill is also available for a private telephone consultation, by appointment only, for a fee (first month is free).
Can I fit an EEG biofeedback session into a 50 minute hour?
- Yes. One exception is the first session which needs to include the initial assessment. You should schedule 1 ½ to 2 hours for this first session.
What will the assessment provide in terms of specific diagnosis and their treatment?
- BrainPaint does not diagnosis anything. The software prompts the practitioner to ask important questions that are involved in one’s mental, emotional and physical performance. Based on your clients’ answers, the software will generate a suggested protocol from its database of protocols developed in research. Additionally, it provides a map of where to place the sensors and will run the protocol for you.
Can BrainPaint treat addictions?
- Yes and no. About 1% of people seeking help for addictions just have the physical aspects of the addition. For this small percentage of the population improving the underlying emotional or cognitive issues is usually all that is necessary. However, for the majority of the addictive population, escaping reality was a way of life before finding a substance to assist them. This population, 80% of which has an addicted parent or grandparent, needs a 12 step program or an ongoing faith based recovery network in conjunction with EEG biofeedback. Research has demonstrated that EEG biofeedback more than doubles the success rate of a person committed to a community based recovery program.
Is EEG biofeedback covered by insurance?
- Yes. Insurance carriers use the code 90801 for EEG biofeedback services and the code 90876 for EEG biofeedback when combined with therapy. Note: Insurance companies do not have the word neurofeedback in their database.
What client data are you interested in?
- Improvements in client objectives between sessions and since starting feedback. Answers to assessment questions and how the new EEG metric data may predict assessment questions. Here is a summary report of stored data, note that the data appears meaningless:
